Clayoquot
Sound, Vancouver Island
The
Tofino area offers a unique variety of birdwatching habitats.
Located
on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the open Pacific Ocean
to the west
offers Pelagic birding with two Albatross species recorded. Known
for storm
blown rarities, Tofino has the first Canadian record of Oriental
Turtle Dove
and the third Canadian record for Brambling.
We are
situated on the Pacific
Flyway
and in the spring tens of thousands
of geese and ducks pass through. A huge eel grass mudflat to
the east is a
stopover for thousands of shorebirds in spring migration. Hundreds
of Whimbrel
and Dowitchers mix with the striking plumage of Black-bellied
Plovers and often
the brilliant Red Knot in breeding plumage. Fifty species of
shorebirds are on
the West Coast Vancouver Island bird checklist.
Long
sandy beaches on the west coast provide walks with eagles soaring
overhead and whales can be sometimes seen from shore. Offshore
small
rocky islands are nesting sites for Black Oystercatchers, murres,
guillemots,
auklets, petrels, and the spectacular Tufted Puffin.

Nearby
Pacific Rim National Park provides convenient trails and boardwalks
for exploring the forests of ancient Red Cedars with Winter Wrens
and Townsend's Warbler. Towering Sitka Spruces above surf pounded
beaches give swooping Peregrine Falcons cover for catching shorebirds.
Sheltered ocean coves and quiet inland fresh water rivers offer
paddling experiences for birds and animals not easily seen on
foot.
Black Bears forage shorelines and River Otters slide through
the water. Just a
short drive inland, mountain areas with Douglas Fir and Yellow
Cedar trees
give us Blue Grouse, Olive-sided and Willow Flycatchers.
Come
and enjoy a quality birding experience in protected areas of
Barkley
and Clayoquot Sound.
The diversity of bird species and quality of habitat
offers world class birding and makes Tofino, and nearby Ucluelet
an excellent birdwatching holiday destination.
